Dr. Valera Lucena Dias,is a Mozambican scientist specializing in Molecular and Cell Biology, Proteomics, and Marine Biology, has been a Lecturer and Researcher at Eduardo Mondlane University since 2006. Rising to the role of Deputy Director for Post-graduation in 2017, she contributes significantly to both teaching and administration, with a focus on Microbiology and Plant Physiology.
Dr. Valera served as the 2020 Coordinator of the election commission for the Faculty of Science Committee and played a pivotal role in organizing the 2018 Symposium of Biodiversity and Development. With a passion for research, Valera has successfully coordinated two scientific projects focusing on macroalgae antimicrobial activity and phytochemical characterization from 2018 to 2021. Her dedication to advancing scientific knowledge led her to author publications covering diverse topics, ranging from phytocompound evaluation to the exploration of seaweeds for bioactive compounds.
She is actively engaged in professional networks such as WIO-RISE, WIOMSA, and OWSD, and has also founded and chairs the Mozambique National Chapter of OWSD, exemplifying her dedication to gender inclusivity in science.She has a Ph.D. from the University of Cape Town, a Master’s from the University of Tasmania, and a Bachelor’s from Eduardo Mondlane University, Mozambique.
